What Hydraulic Breaker Attachment do I Need?

So, what’s the difference between a Tarmac Cutter Breaker attachment and a Chisel Breaker attachment? And what happens if you get this wrong?
A common mistake that is often made is to assume that a Tarmac Cutter and a Chisel are both the same tool and will both do the same job, this is far from the truth. Excavator mounted hydraulic breakers all use the same principle to secure the attachment into the body of the unit, this is by the means of a cut-out on the attachment shaft. This means that unlike small handheld breakers , SDS and SDS-Max etc, you can only fit the attachment one way. So what does this mean if you have purchased a chisel when you needed a tarmac cutter, or vice versa? You are in trouble!
So, what’s the difference?

A Tarmac Cutter will cut a vertical cut pointing directly away from the machine/ operator. This attachment is used to cut straight lines down the sides of a trench for example.

A chisel attachment will cut a perpendicular line running at 90° to the machine / operator. This attachment is used to strip layers of tarmac or similar material.
As you can now see, the one attachment will not perform the same task as the other and it’s important to spec the correct tool for the application.
